Medium – ReCap – Season 5, Episode 7 – A Necessary Evil – air date 8/11/09.
In this episode Allison is having doubts about the motives of the ghost of Agent Cooper, who is intruding on her life once again, supposedly trying to help her solve a murder. Meanwhile, Allison’s husband Joe is undergoing a crisis of his own. The person that he has just hired (on his boss’s recommendation) is not someone that he is comfortable with.

Allison has a dream about a man who is about to go into a diner and kill several people. The man shows up dead – a supposed suicide – before he can kill anyone. She has a second dream, where she sees him writing the suicide note, then standing on a chair under a noose. However, he is not contemplating suicide – he is begging for his life, from someone in the background who is calmly threatening to shoot him if he does not jump off the chair and hang himself. When he is unable to do so, this person kicks the chair out from under him.

Allison has another dream, this time about a woman. She is being made to write a suicide note, and then inject herself with a drug that will kill her. She is also begging for her life. We hear the same voice as in the previous dream, and then we see the face of a young male wearing a hoodie.

Both the man and woman are judged to be suicides, as this is where the evidence points. Allison’s boss states that there is really no evidence to look into. Dillon suggests that Allison go through high school yearbooks to see if she can identify the young man, which she does. She then goes to his school, to see if she can find him – not to interview, just to see him and see if he is the face from her dream.

Allison then has another dream, where she sees Agent Cooper telling the young man exactly what to do to break into these people’s houses undetected and kill them. Allison addresses this with him, and he tries to enlist her to work with him. He will help her solve crimes, if she stays out of his way in murdering people that he claims would have taken the lives of many other people. He informs her that she cannot help the young boy – that he is under his, Agent Cooper’s, control.

Allison goes to visit the boy, who it seems has the same talents that she does (which is why he can see the ghost of Agent Cooper). He claims that they are doing a good thing, and that she needs to leave.

Allison has a dream in which the husband of the woman that was killed commits suicide. She calls her boss, and the man is found, in his home, where he shot himself inth e head. He is alive, and is rushed to the hospital.

As Allison leaves work that night, the young boy, Brandon, is in her car. He wants her to write a suicide note. Then he has her drive to the top of the vacant parking garage (this is late at night), where he tries to get her to jump. She refuses, and tells him that he is not saving lives. She tells him about the woman’s husband that committed suicide, which makes him stop and think.

The ghost of Agent Cooper shows up, telling Brandon that he needs to shoot Allison so that they can continue their work. He refuses, and ends up shooting himself in the head.

Meanwhile, Ariel has been having dreams. In one dream, the man who actually wrote the specs that the man her father hired claimed to have written demands that she tell her father what happened. In a second dream, he tells Ariel exactly how to solve the problem that her father is working on. With this information in hand, Joe’s boss agrees to fire the man.

Right has prevailed – in both cases – but at a cost.
