When a disaster strikes, we are all shocked. Then we try to move ourselves to whatever action we can take. Right now we are facing an environmental disaster – the BP oil spill n the Gulf, the loss of innocent lives, and the vast, seemingly never ending, ecological repercussions. I decided to do a reading on this, to put all of this into some kind of perspective.

What we know about this disaster is that the “life” of this planet … our environment … is out of balance. How we see our environment, and how we interact with it, is in a state of disconnect. The is a time of walking the middle path, of looking at the larger picture of life as we know it and acting accordingly. Temperance is thought of as a healing card in the Tarot. Healing can be gentle, or it can be seen as a trial by fire. Humankind allowed itself to get out of control, so we are now facing the “trial by fire”.
What we don’t know about this disaster, what is not on a conscious level for us at this time, is that things are going to be happening very quickly. We do not have time to ponder any issues here – we have waited too long already! We need to take swift action to see any form of significant, effective results.
What we need to know a bout this disaster is that we need to stand our ground and protect what is ours. I see this as meaning that the companies responsible for this accident need to be held responsible on all levels, that our government needs to be held responsible, and that we need to be held responsible as individuals for our interaction with our planet. Serious thought needs to be given to whether off shore drilling is viable, or too risky. On a more general level, we need to act in a different manner regarding the limited resources on our planet.
What actions can we take? The Hermit is the perfect advice for us! The Hermit asks us to go within and find our own truth. We then need to live that truth in our own lives, and shine the light of wisdom so that others can learn from us. Throwing money at this disaster, if that is what we choose to do, should be done wisely. Focus on volunteer groups that are working to protect our coastline and the animal and aquatic life that is being affected by the oil in the water.
Give the gift of healing – we can all do this. Send out your prayers to protect Mother Earth and all of her children. Send prayers for the water, t he land, and life in all forms that is being affected by this tragedy. Send prayers, or Reiki healing, or whatever you do as often as you can. There is no timeline as to when there will be a significant recovery here. Some damage may be irreversible. We need to open our hearts, pray, and allow whatever Higher Source we believe in to lead us into the actions we need to take.
